IT’S OFFICIAL: ANNE HATHAWAY IS CATWOMAN AND TOM HARDY IS BANE IN ‘THE DARK KNIGHT RISES’

Big, huge boobs, Earth-shattering news today out of the Batman camp, as Warner Brothers announced the casting of the two villains in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming sequel, The Dark Knight Rises. Here’s the full release:

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” She will be starring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.”

In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.” Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven. “The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

My initial impressions? Anne Hathaway is smokin’ hot and Tom Hardy is a badass.

What? you want more analysis? Fine. I can’t say I’m surprised that Nolan is using Catwoman, as she was really the last villain that fits into the realistic world Nolan has crafted for his Batman movies, but Bane? His inclusion is perplexing, as he is sort of the DC Comics version of Venom – a big, scary, musclebound threat without much character, who seems to exist solely for fight scenes. In fact, Bane’s gimmick is that he injects himself with a super steroid-like drug called “venom”. He isn’t the grunting goon with inflatable muscles that appeared in the excremental Batman & Robin, but he pales in comparison to the richness of character found in other members of Batman’s rogues gallery. Hopefully, Hardy’s interpretation of Bane adds some much-needed depth and mystery to the character.
