Some sad news for the horror community just before the holiday, as
genre icon Ingrid Pitt passed away from heart disease yesterday evening
at the age of 73.
The leading lady of British horror, Pitt was known for her work with the venerable Hammer Films. A survivor of the concentration camps in Poland as a child, Pitt went on to pursue a career in film, debuting in the Clint Eastwood actioner Where Eagles
Dare. A year later, Pitt hooked up with Jose Carrera and his Hammer Films house of horror, becoming the studio’s — already known for its stable of beauties– go-to leading lady, appearing in films like The Vampire Lovers and Countess Dracula.
In her later years, Pitt continued to make cameo roles and write for various publications. While we, as a horror community, mourn her loss, this Thanksgiving,
let’s give thanks to the much-admired body of work the lovely Ingrid Pitt left behind.
